THE LADDER STREETS

As the signs attest, the Old Corner Bookstore, seen in 1905, was built in 1712 and was one of the more popular bookstores in the city. In the early 20th century, the upper floors were used for small businesses, which including a wood engraver, barbershop, cleaners, clothing shop, and loan broker. (Author’s collection.)

The “Ladder Streets” of Boston are side streets that connect Washington and Tremont Streets. Court, School, Bromfield, Winter, and West Streets and Temple Place are followed showing the rich overlay of the city’s development.
